Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to compare between the ventilatory response to upper
versus lower limb exercises in males with COPD.
Material and methods: Thirty male patients with mild to moderate degree of COPD
participated in the study, Their age ranged from 40 to 60 years .They were divided into two equal
groups ; group (A) performed upper limb exercise plus receiving medical treatment, while
Group (B) performed lower limb exercise program plus receiving medical treatment. The study
lasted 6 weeks. Ventilatory functions were measured pre and post study for both groups.
Results: Statistically, there was significant improvement in measured values (FEV1, FVC,
FEV1/FVC, and MVV) of the lower limbs exercise group in contrast to those of the upper limbs
group < br />
Conclusion: It is recommended to encourage the COPD patients to participate in lower limb
exercise program to improve their ventilatory functions.
